Setting up Slate

  1. 1.Download the Slate app

Download Slate – Block Distractions from the App Store, open it, and complete the NFC and Screen Time permission setup so Slate can block the apps and categories you select. No account is required.

  2. 2.Add your Blocks

Select the number of Blocks included in your package, then hold the top edge of your iPhone against each Block until the app confirms that it has been registered.

  3. 3.Place multiple Blocks around your morning routine

Keep your Blocks in separate places instead of together. For example, place one near your bed, one in the bathroom, and one in the kitchen so completing your normal routine naturally leads you to scan every Block.

  4. 4.Choose what Slate should block

Select distracting apps or categories such as social media, games, entertainment, or shopping while keeping essential apps available.

  5. 5.Configure your Wake Up routine

Choose when blocking begins, confirm which Blocks must be scanned, and review when your apps will automatically unlock if the routine is not completed.

  6. 6.Create additional focus routines

Create routines for studying, working, reading, or winding down, then choose the apps, required Blocks, schedule, and any timer settings for each routine.

  7. 7.Test the full setup

Start a routine, confirm that the selected apps are blocked, and scan each required Block with the top of your iPhone until the app shows that the routine is complete and restores access.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to use Slate?

Slate requires an iPhone 7 or later, the free Slate – Block Distractions app, NFC permission, Screen Time permission, and at least one physical Slate Block. Slate is not compatible with Android.

Does the Slate app require an account or internet connection?

No. The Slate app does not require an account or an internet connection for its core blocking, routine, and NFC features.

How do I start a focus session?

Open Slate, choose a routine or timed lock, review what it will block, then use the hold-to-start control. The selected distractions stay unavailable while the session is active.

How do I unlock during an active session?

Open Slate and follow the prompt to scan the Block assigned to that routine. Hold the top of your iPhone close to the Block until the scan completes.

Can I create more than one routine?

Yes. You can create routines for different parts of your day—such as waking up, daytime focus, and deep work—and give each one its own blocked apps and settings.

Can Slate block websites as well as apps?

Slate supports blocking selected apps and websites. The choices available to you may depend on your iPhone settings and the permissions granted to Slate.

Will Slate work on my Mac or computer?

Yes. Slate for Mac blocks selected websites and apps on macOS 14.0 or later and can sync blocks and schedules with the Slate iOS app through iCloud. Download it and follow the full setup at blockedbyslate.com/mac.

Does Slate require a subscription?

No subscription is currently required to use the Slate app with your Blocks.

What should I do if my Block will not scan?

Unlock your iPhone, open Slate, and make sure the scan prompt is active. Slowly move the top edge of the phone across the Block and hold it there briefly. If it still fails, restart Slate and try again before contacting support.

How do I get help with an order, return, or refund?

Email support@blockedbyslate.com with the email used at checkout and your order number, if available. You may cancel before shipment. After delivery, your full order is covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee for any reason. No return is required, and there is no return postage to pay. For visible transit damage, contact us within 7 days with your order details and photos. Manufacturing defects and unresolved lost packages remain covered under the Shipping & Returns Policy and applicable law.

How long does delivery take?

United States orders are estimated to arrive within 7 calendar days after purchase. If an order is delayed, Slate will email the address used at checkout with the available options.

How does each Slate Block work?

Each compact magnetic Slate Block uses passive NFC technology and requires no battery, power, or charging. Its durable white matte enclosure has rounded edges for everyday placement around your routine.

How should I use and store the magnetic Blocks safely?

Slate Blocks are for ages 13+. Do not use one if the enclosure is cracked or damaged. Keep Blocks away from children and pets, and at least 6 inches (15 cm) from pacemakers, implanted medical devices, and magnet-sensitive equipment. Keep them dry, avoid excessive heat, and do not open or modify the enclosure. If a magnet becomes exposed or is swallowed, seek immediate medical attention.

How can I ask a privacy or data question?
